Anticipation

Jesus Hands

Every Wednesday we’ll post something to do with doctrine and recovery. Hope it helps. — Anticipation Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.  (I John 3: 2-3) Love it, or sick of it already, I know you’ve heard this sung repeatedly by now: “Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow Will find it hard to sleep Continue Reading

Another Spirit

freedom

Every Wednesday we’ll post something to do with doctrine and recovery. Hope it helps. — Another Spirit But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land where into he went; and his seed shall possess it. - Numbers 14:24 There’s a spirit within most people, I guess, which could properly be called the status quo spirit – the frame of mind and heart that settles, stays with what’s comfortably familiar, and never considers conquering new territory. It Continue Reading

You, Interrupted

Solution - break the rule

Every Wednesday we’ll post something to do with doctrine and recovery. Hope it helps. — You, Interrupted And when Jesus beheld him, He said, ‘Thou art Simon the son of Jonah: thou shalt be called Cephas’ which is by interpretation, A stone. -John 1:42 Think you know yourself? You do, I’m sure, as much as your limited experience, intellect and perspective will allow. But in this, as in all matters of human understanding, it’s through a glass darkly, partial and obscured, incomplete. (I Corinthians 13:12) Because you, as Continue Reading

The Feminine Mistake

fem_mystique-2

Every Tuesday we’ll post something to do with strengthening marriages. Hope it helps. — The Feminine Mistake This year marks the 50th anniversary of Betty Friedan’s groundbreaking The Feminine Mystique  a landmark book which shaped and propelled the modern feminist movement. Today some of Friedan’s ideas would seem pretty tame, even to social conservatives like myself who see nothing wrong with women working, or opting not to marry, or choosing and pursuing careers. Nor have I ever found the idea of equal pay to be anything but Continue Reading

Treasured

Every Wednesday we’ll post something having to do with doctrine and purity. Hope it helps. — Treasured “How precious also are Your thoughts to me, oh God” - Psalm 139:17 Before making this declaration of God’s precious thoughts towards him, David first described how God knew him inside out, noting “You know my downsitting and my uprising, You know my thoughts afar off, You are acquainted with all my ways.” (Psalm 139: 2-3) In short, You know me as fully as You love me; You love me as completely as You know Continue Reading

When Words Fail

Try describing the truth about it – its enormity, its barbarism, your astonished rage -  and words fail. They only help when conveying the facts, which are pretty simple: yesterday morning a 20 year old gunman stormed into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut, where, after killing his own mother, he proceeded to end 26 more lives, his included. 20 of them were schoolchildren as young as 5. As of this writing, that’s what we know. Those are the facts. Now the truth, harder to articulate, but summarized with partial accuracy Continue Reading

No Flakes

Honestly Speaking

Every Thursday I’ll post an article having to do with either relational or emotional matters. Hope it helps. — No Flakes Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint.  (Proverbs 25:19)  Decades ago, while babysitting a friend’s two young children, I overheard the littlest one commenting on the snowy scene she was watching on a cartoon: “It’s so pretty!”, she squealed, then mis-pronounced, “There’s no flakes all over the world.” Utopia, I thought to myself. Zombied with Children

zombies ahead

Every Tuesday we’ll post something to do with restoring marriages. Hope it helps. — Zombied with Children  The current rage of all things zombie – The Walking Dead series on AMC, zombie movies, zombie apocalypse enthusiasts - is puzzling. The creatures are, after all, nothing new, having been described in countless novels and horror films, so why they’re enjoying such popularity now eludes me. And it’s not as if they have qualities you can connect with, as some monsters do. Frankenstein’s creature had a certain childlikeness Continue Reading

So Right, So Wrong

1870 Engraving of the Prophet Elijah

Every Wednesday we’ll post something to do with doctrine and recovery. Hope it helps. — So Right, So Wrong “The children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left.” - Elijah, downcast and afraid, from I Kings 19:10 How easily we can swing between two critical errors: doctrinal sloppiness and self-righteousness. Between the two I’d say doctrinal sloppiness is the easier one to notice. After all, something is either true or it’s not, the Continue Reading
