The Unscheduled Appointment

child plane

Every Thursday we’ll post something to do with relational or emotional concerns. Hope it helps. — The Unscheduled Appointment I love what I do for a living, and count myself hugely blessed when I remember how rare it is for your work and your first love to be the same. I come alongside men getting serious about their holiness, I write on subjects that matter to me, and I speak to churches and conferences, all of which I’d do as a volunteer if I had to do something else for income. My work is my passion, so I’m a pathetic brat if Continue Reading

Facing The Fire

faith

Every Wednesday we’ll post something to do with doctrine and recovery.  — Facing the Fire “Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire ---” I Corinthians 3:11-13 Any Christian feeling a call to service should get a good grasp on the parable of stewardship in Matthew 25:14-30. It describes a master commissioning his servants with differing amounts of money, then taking a Continue Reading

Some Thoughts About the Marriage Debate

rebuilding-her-shattered-trust-marriage-matters

This week we will hear arguments presented to the US Supreme Court which will, most likely, settle the legality of same-sex marriage once and for all. So far the justices are predictably divided – 3 for the traditional view; 3 for revision; Justice Kennedy  providing the swing vote.  Two cases are under consideration here: The Defense of Marriage Act and California’s Proposition 8, voted into place by California voters in 2008 as a defense of traditional marriage. Whatever the outcome, there’ll be anguish and elation, simultaneously, Continue Reading

You, Interrupted

Solution - break the rule

Every Wednesday we’ll post something to do with doctrine and recovery. Hope it helps. — You, Interrupted And when Jesus beheld him, He said, ‘Thou art Simon the son of Jonah: thou shalt be called Cephas’ which is by interpretation, A stone. -John 1:42 Think you know yourself? You do, I’m sure, as much as your limited experience, intellect and perspective will allow. But in this, as in all matters of human understanding, it’s through a glass darkly, partial and obscured, incomplete. (I Corinthians 13:12) Because you, as Continue Reading

Of Morsels and Birthrights

freedom

Every Monday we’ll post something about maintaining your sexual integrity. Hope it helps. — Of Morsels and Birthrights Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.  For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears. - Hebrews 12: 16-17 I used to think Esau got a raw deal. He was a young man of the earth, skilled in hunting and physical prowess, Continue Reading

He’s Just Not That Into Him

Tired.

Every Tuesday we’ll post something to do with strengthening marriages. Hope it helps. — He’s Just Not That Into Him A book and subsequent film titled “He’s Just Not That Into You” looked at the phenomena of single women who find it hard to accept the fact that when a man doesn’t return phone calls, breaks promises to get in touch, or keeps making excuses for not getting together, it doesn’t mean he had a car accident. Nor was he kidnapped, drugged, or overcome with the flu. It simply means he’s not that into you. Continue Reading

Brazenly Yours

forgiven

Every Wednesday we’ll post a message having to do with doctrine and purity. Hope it helps. — Brazenly Yours Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. - Hebrews 4:16 Three times I’ve been appointed Power of Attorney by someone wanting me to manage their business in light of serious illness, and each time the person in question was much wealthier than me. That meant I had discretion to write checks, make sales, and transfer money that I had not earned, Continue Reading

Die, Monster Flesh, Die!

"For I know that in me, that is in my flesh, there dwells no good thing."

Every Monday we’ll post something to do with maintaining sexual purity. Hope it helps. --- Die, Monster Flesh, Die! “For I know that in me, that is in my flesh, there dwells no good thing.” - Romans 7:18 ‘Tis the season for monsters, and despite reservations about horror for entertainment, I’ll admit to having a perverse fondness for the cinema creatures that spooked me as a boy. Norman Bates, The Crawling Eye, Baby Jane Hudson and The Thing all cost me a few nights sleep back in the early 1960’s, but none so much as The Continue Reading

Watched

DeNiro

Every Monday we’ll post something to do with personal purity. Hope it helps. — Watched Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. - Hebrews 4:13 Ezekiel makes a brief and chillingly prophetic observation about God’s people looking secretly at forbidden imagery when he recounts the Lord saying to him: “Son of man, hast thou seen what the ancients of the house of Israel do in the dark, every man in the chambers of his Continue Reading
