Talking Marriage With A Human Rights Commission

rebuilding-her-shattered-trust-marriage-matters

This week I was asked to speak to a Human Rights Commission in another state about the role Christians can play in opposing discrimination. I appreciated the chance, and enjoyed discussing how conservative Christians like myself find common ground with anyone opposing the mistreatment of others. During my presentation, I mentioned that Jesus did clarify in Matthew 19 that marriage was designed to be a heterosexual, monogamous and permanent union, yet He also vigorously defended the marginalized – prostitutes, a Samaritan woman living with a Continue Reading

Relevance or Revision?

casual Christians guy with open bible

Ten years ago I wrote this for a local church that was challenged by its own denomination’s wavering on homosexuality. Since this church refused to accept the denomination’s drift towards a pro-homosexual position, it was being accused by many of being “irrelevant.”  I wrote this for them in response to that charge, and running across it today, I decided to dust it off and pass it on again. Hope it’s useful. --- RELEVANCE OR REVISION? Are Christians called to re-write the Bible in order to truly love our gay friends and Continue Reading

The Gay Marriage Debate: Winning, Losing or Dropping Out? (Part Seven or an Eight Part Series. Full list of links to all posts in the series at the end of this article.) From Apologies to Apologists It seems we’re forever swinging to or from extremes. That’s true of much of life, church life in particular. At times we see the Christian population with its nose buried in End Times writings; other times you’d think, by the lack of attention paid to it, that the Second Coming was a discarded myth. Sometimes we’ve sought political Continue Reading

The Gay Marriage Debate: Winning, Losing or Dropping Out? (Part 5)

I’m more grateful than I can say for the response to yesterday’s blog post regarding the protestor I briefly saw at Chik-Fil-A. Over 6,300 shares have gone out as of this writing, which is surely a first for this blog! I know the subject is volatile, relevant, and in some ways very complex, so I hope all of us keep a prayerful attitude when discussing it. Thanks again for taking the time to read it, and for your participation at this site. --- The Gay Marriage Debate: Winning, Losing or Dropping Out? (Part 5) Since public opinion Continue Reading

Bad Form

smash

Every Wednesday we’ll post something having to do with doctrine and purity. Hope it helps. — Bad Form “Having a form of godliness but denying the power thereof; from such turn away.” - II Timothy 3:5 My wife and I have followed the NBC series Smash since its first episode, generally enjoying it; sometimes hitting the pause button when the occasional tryst or needlessly suggestive moment is featured. It centers on the evolution of a Broadway musical based on Marilyn Monroe’s final years, and provides a dynamite cast, Continue Reading

One Man + One Woman = Much Heat

young family

On Wednesdays we look at doctrinal matters, and for the past few weeks I’ve been writing on four doctrinal essentials seeming to be “under construction” in the interest of new and improved truth: The Sinful Nature of Humanity, The Exclusivity of Christ, The Existence of Hell, and the Definition of the Family (this post.) We’ve already discussed the first three, and today I had planned addressing the Definition of the Family by noting how controversial it is these days to promote it, and what hot water public figures get into when they Continue Reading

How Then Should We Respond? Homosexuality and The Church

church prayer

I’d sure appreciate your prayers, as this weekend I’ll be speaking in Atlanta for the Love Won Out conference on homosexuality and the Church’s response. I don’t normally post on this topic since I’ve already written a number of books and articles on it, but today I would like to pass along an article I wrote for the Southern Baptist Voice back in ’02 on the subject of a Biblical response to this difficult issue. It’s a long post, but if the subject is of concern to you, I hope you’ll find this a useful read. God bless, and have Continue Reading

Random Ramblings #21: Weekend Speaking Engagements in Cleveland Ohio

joe 2

Every Friday we’ll take a break from topical posts and will post some random personal thoughts. — A Cuppa Joe – Random Ramblings from a Fellow Struggler I’d sure appreciate your prayers this weekend, as I will be speaking in Cleveland to a variety of groups. Friday the 4th I’ll be addressing a local high school mid-day, giving my testimony and discussing the long term effects of porn on marriage and relationships in general. Truly looking forward to being with the students to talk this through, as candidly and boldly as Continue Reading
