Weekend At The Movies

film

If you’re off to the movies this weekend you might consider Robert Redford’s new film “The Company You Keep.” Being at odds with Mr. Redford on virtually all things social and political, I went to the theater expecting a left wing sermon, especially considering the supporting cast of Susan Sarandon, Nick Nolte and other notable Hollywood liberals. But I actually liked it so much I took my wife and son to see it with me for a second viewing, and it opened up a long and interesting family discussion on guilt, youthful zeal, Baby Continue Reading

Let’s Unite in Prayer for Boston

prayer

I’ll be taping a series of interviews at Daystar Television in Texas on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. In lieu of the normal Marriage and Doctrine postings I do on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, let’s instead continue in prayer over Monday’s horrific attack on Boston. Please join me in bringing these requests before the throne: May God touch and grant supernatural strength and comfort to the families who lost loved ones. May God heal the injured, and ease their pain. May God immediately intervene and prevent any further attacks Continue Reading

Coming Out Manly

gay pride flag

Men coming out of the closet is business as usual. But pro athletes coming out of the locker room are another matter, one that’s making ripples and headlines everywhere.  As of this writing, at least one unnamed but presumably well-known professional player, from one of the four major sports, is about to drop the “I’m Gay” bomb. The National Hockey League, in anticipation of the big event, now officially offers its support to gay Americans in general and gay athletes in particular. Not to be outdone, the National Football League has Continue Reading

Prayers and Mercy for Rick Warren and Family

WarrenRick

Pastor Rick Warren’s beloved son Matthew just took his life, leaving behind a devastated family and a multitude of unanswered, and probably unanswerable, questions. I’ve wrestled with depression for decades and was diagnosed, during one horrific period of my life, as suicidal. It’s been decades, but I’ll never consider myself immune to depression’s pull. When it hits, it’s a tsunami, and swimming against it seems all but fruitless. So to a point, I strongly empathize with Matthew, even as I want to kick his butt and say Continue Reading

Obama’s Blunder; Was It Really That Bad? Renee and Joe at an Impasse

kamala harris

Renee and I are having an argument and nobody’s budging. It’s not bad; we’re just at an impasse over President Obama’s remarks about Secretary of State Kamala Harris, his subsequent apology, and the media fallout. Now, as I understand it, The President, addressing a fundraising lunch in Atherton, California , referred to Ms. Harris as “the best-looking attorney general in the country." Uproar ensured; talking heads bobbed. No surprise there; that’s the kind of thing our 24 hour news cycle thrives on. But what did startle me Continue Reading

Tears of Remembrance On Good Friday

crown of thorns 2

Every Friday we’ll take a break from topical posts and will post some random personal thoughts. — Tears of Remembrance on Good Friday I cried when I saw Schindler’s List, copiously and without embarrassment. The film taught me nothing new about the holocaust, so it didn’t educate me. But it reminded me, via graphic story-telling, of something unfathomable, something that should regularly be remembered and grieved. So weeping was called for. But afterwards I had to ask myself So what? Would crying erase the suffering, much less Continue Reading

Some Thoughts About the Marriage Debate

rebuilding-her-shattered-trust-marriage-matters

This week we will hear arguments presented to the US Supreme Court which will, most likely, settle the legality of same-sex marriage once and for all. So far the justices are predictably divided – 3 for the traditional view; 3 for revision; Justice Kennedy  providing the swing vote.  Two cases are under consideration here: The Defense of Marriage Act and California’s Proposition 8, voted into place by California voters in 2008 as a defense of traditional marriage. Whatever the outcome, there’ll be anguish and elation, simultaneously, Continue Reading

Talking Marriage With A Human Rights Commission

rebuilding-her-shattered-trust-marriage-matters

This week I was asked to speak to a Human Rights Commission in another state about the role Christians can play in opposing discrimination. I appreciated the chance, and enjoyed discussing how conservative Christians like myself find common ground with anyone opposing the mistreatment of others. During my presentation, I mentioned that Jesus did clarify in Matthew 19 that marriage was designed to be a heterosexual, monogamous and permanent union, yet He also vigorously defended the marginalized – prostitutes, a Samaritan woman living with a Continue Reading

Class Goes Crass

oscars

I’m a movie fan who never watches the Oscars. Back in 2003, when Best Documentary winner Michael Moore hijacked the proceedings to launch a tirade against President Bush, I decided I’d had enough. For years I’d already been feeling “preached to” during the ceremonies by different Hollywood evangelists who used their acceptance speech time to promote various causes, but Moore’s tantrum was just too much. We’ve never watched the show since then. Until last Sunday night, when we relented a bit and recorded it for future viewing. We Continue Reading
