Random Ramblings from a Fellow Struggler #2

Every Friday we’ll break away from the topic format, and instead post some random thoughts about current events, spiritual issues or personal matters.

Congressman Anthony Weiner stepped down. Good move; ‘bout time. Seems he finally realized this sort of scandal renders him ineffective publicly. I never knew much about the man prior to this, except that he was one of the more bombastic types with a caustic tongue. His past interviews bear this out – sneering, sarcastic responses to people who disagreed with or challenged him; arrogant and sweeping criticisms of conservatives. Ever notice how much easier it is to forgive a man his weakness when he’s been a reasonably nice guy in other ways, but how much harder it is to forgive the guy if, in general, he’s behaved like a jerk?

I have trouble liking a guy like that, but I’d have more trouble kicking him when he’s down. So let’s not. He’s on my prayer list.

When I sexually sinned back in the 70’s and 80’s, there was scandal attached to that as well. Everyone found out – former parishioners (I’d been in full time ministry prior to my fall) friends and colleagues. I remember very well what it’s like being the bad guy. If you’ve never been in that position, trust me, it’s like being naked in the middle of a crowded street. Wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

Lost 2 pounds this week, and five during the Exodus Conference in Ashville last week. (Did lots of speaking there, and somehow, flapping my big mouth burns calories. Go figure.) 7 down; 43 to go. John the Baptist said it well: “He must increase, but I must decrease.” (John 3: 30)

My fifteen year old son Jeremy plays guitar and percussion with the high school worship team at our church.  I pick him up from rehearsals and nearly cry, I’m so proud and blessed. He doesn’t get it. Don’t expect him to. I’m Dad, not his best buddy, and leading him during this phase of his life is so critical. But in places I’d rather not cop to, I wonder if he’s nearly as proud of his old man as his old man is of him, of if I’m just that odd fellow who talks about sex all the time, carts him from event to event, and coughs up money upon request.

Was I clueless about my own parent’s needs when I was that age? Memo to self: call mom and apologize.

Happy Father’s Day to all my brothers who do the Dad thing. Hope you love it as much as I do. Heck, I know you do. Have a great weekend.
