Random Ramblings from a Fellow Struggler #10: The Help, Weight Loss Update, Off to Philadelphia

Every Friday we’ll take a break from topical posts and will post some random personal thoughts.

A Cuppa Joe – Random Ramblings from a Fellow Struggler

Took my wife and son to see The Help this past weekend, and was moved and impressed. If you’re not familiar with the film, it follows an Alabama female journalist who, in the early 1960’s, wrote about the experiences of African American women in the South who raised other people’s children, worked for less than minimum wage, and lived, essentially, in the back of the bus. The performances are at times breathtaking, and I’m sure there’ll be plenty of Oscar talk associated with the movie.

What struck me most about the story was the power of Groupthink. Some of the main characters knew the system was wrong, and felt badly about it, but also were convinced things were simply the way they were, and racial injustice was an unalterable fact of life. Everyone seemed to accept it; few were willing to challenge a deeply ingrained but horrific status quo. But what a reward, in this life and the next, for those who did.

Lots to think about in there, especially for a Christian living in 2011.

Lost another three pounds. Progress is too slow; relapse too easy. Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit. I need more fruit in my diet.

Leaving for Philadelphia to teach The Game Plan seminar, one of my favorite things to do. It’s a day-long seminar for men, drawn from my book of the same name, geared towards equipping and encouraging guys who’ve compromised with porn or other forms of acting out, and are now willing to get serious about purity. Always a pleasure meeting and partnering with guys like that. I love it so much that I do it for free, but I charge an honorarium for waiting in airports, sitting in middle seats, missing flights, flagging down taxis and shuttle vans, and wrestling with coffee makers in hotel rooms.

No complaints, though. Domestic travel is not the stuff martyrs are made of. Wonderful to serve our gracious God.

Hope your weekend is wonderful, too.

Joe, congratulations on 3 lbs. I know weight loss is slow. I topped out at 395 about 5 years ago and over the last 3 1/2 years have lost over 150. I was able to do it with a little help called gastric bypass surgery, however I lost half of it before surgery. Allowing the Lord to work on my inner man and Him bringing me much longed for healing and restoration made it easier for God and me to work on the outer man. Blessings to you.
