Random Ramblings from a Fellow Struggler #11: Elizabeth, Essential Truths and Philadelphia

Every Friday we’ll take a break from topical posts and will post some random personal thoughts.

A Cuppa Joe – Random Ramblings from a Fellow Struggler

I’m sitting here with Renee watching a showing of the  film Elizabeth (an account of Queen Elizabeth’s ascension over a sharply divided England) and am reminded of how insanely passionate people become about doctrinal differences, even to the point of war and death. English history is one of so many examples, albeit a quite colorful and romantic one. Still, what truths are worth a fight, and which ones are non-essentials? There’s the rub.

I’d say the divinity of Christ, the infallibility of the scriptures, and the sanctity of the family are non-negotiables. I can respect those holding a different view on these issues, but we can hardly be in communion. They, I believe, are doctrines both sacred and vital; critical to the faith and worth falling on the sword for. The rapture of the Church being pre, mid or post tribulation? Not worth fighting over. Eternal security versus the you can lose it if you mess up too badly view? Yawn. Plenty of room for diverse views without breaking fellowship.

You might disagree; fair enough. But I hope all of us carefully choose our non-negotiables before dividing over them.

Had a blessed and dynamic weekend in Philadelphia teaching The Game Plan purity seminar this past weekend. Living Faith Christian Center was dynamic and immeasurably hospitable, and what a joy it was being with men who were saying, in essence, “Let’s get serious about what matters to God”. Real power in that.

Hope there’s real power in your weekend, too. Thanks for dropping by. Have a great weekend.
