Every Friday we’ll take a break from topical posts and will post some random personal thoughts

A Cuppa Joe – Random Ramblings from a Fellow Struggler

Five to One – A New Monthly Feature

5 recent blog postings worth passing on:

Chuck Colson rebukes Christians showing a callous response to the death penalty in particular, and to people in general, in “Cheering Death”:

C. Michael Patton’s Parchment and Pen site is one of the best sources for doctrinal posts I know of. Here he discusses the crucial difference between believing in God versus believing God:

Randy Thomas, one of the friendliest provocateurs you’ll ever find, shares a dialogue he’s had with a liberal friend in “Why Do Christians En Masse Believe Crazy Things?”

http://exgaysuperstar.com/christians-believe-crazy-things-liberal-friend

Dr. Jonathon Witt of the Discovery Institute for Science and Culture critiques the Darwinian theory of sexual selection and offers an alternative theory for natural beauty in “Of Butterflies, Peacock Tails and Poppycock” at http://blog.equip.org/?p=270

Nicely practical article on developing in house internet policies with kids at Covenant Eyes blog: http://www.covenanteyes.com/2011/09/29/guarding-our-sons-eyes-from-sexual-sin-practical-tips-for-christian-parents/

4 quotes worth passing on:

“Jesus came to pay a debt He did not owe, Because we owed a debt we could not pay.” -Evangelist Greg Laurie

“Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.” -Helen Keller

“Now, remember, you will never know the fullness of Christ until you know the emptiness of everything else but Christ.” -Charles Spurgeon

“O would some Power some gift to give us, To see ourselves as others see us! It would from many a blunder free us, And foolish notion.” -Robert Burns

3 movies I strongly recommend:

To Kill a Mockingbird” (1962)

My favorite movie hands down, full of unforgettable moments that still bring tears. You can’t watch it without taking away something new with each viewing.

The Great Escape” (1963)

Everyone I wanted to hang out with as a kid is in it – Steve McQueen, James Garner, Charles Bronson – and it’s still as entertaining and fun as ever.

The Chosen” (1981)

A not so well known but beautifully crafted look at two Jewish youths – one strictly Orthodox; one liberal –coming of age in WWII New York. Give this one a try if you haven’t seen it.

2 books I’ve recently read and enjoyed:

Decision Points” by President George W. Bush

‘Bout time we got his side of things, and to this old Republican it’s a side that still (generally) makes good sense.

Breathless” by Dean Koontz

Koontz delivers such engaging science fiction mystery, I read this in two flights during a recent trip. Chilling and tender, which is no small feat.

1 prayer request:

Please pray this blog will be used to build people up, provide some help with critical problems, and honor God. I’d love to hear your feedback, criticisms, suggestions, whatever. Thanks so much for being part of this.

-Joe
